Thon Hotel Drammen

Thon Hotel Drammen opened in the summer of 2026 as Thon Hotels' first hotel in Drammen. The hotel is centrally located in Drammen Helsepark on Brakerøya, between Brakerøya station and the new hospital. With 220 hotel rooms, a restaurant, café and extensive course and conference facilities, the hotel has been developed as a new meeting place for both business travelers, conference guests and visitors to the area.

The hotel is part of the first phase of construction in Drammen Helsepark, a new health and innovation district under development on Brakerøya. DARK Arkitekter has been the architect for the project, while Zinc has been responsible for the interior architecture.

Norlux Hospitality has delivered lighting solutions for the hotel's common areas, restaurant, conference and meeting rooms, guest rooms and a number of other areas. The task has been to combine functional requirements with a warm and inviting expression that plays with materials, colors and interior.

Light with contrasts and variation

A hotel has very different lighting requirements from room to room. In restaurants, lobbies and social areas, it is largely about atmosphere, contrasts and experience. In meeting rooms and conference areas, the lighting must also provide good working conditions, higher light levels and greater uniformity.

In the lobby and reception, Cold 10 is used as a discreet background lighting. The recessed light source provides good visual comfort and allows the light itself to receive more attention than the luminaire. Together with Zoom spotlights , eye-catching points and a clearer play of light and shadow are created.

Zoom has an adjustable spread angle from 6 to 60 degrees and is mounted on Global Pulse Track. It provides great flexibility to highlight details, furniture and zones, while allowing the lighting to be adapted if the interior design changes. The order for the hotel includes 194 Zoom spotlights and an extensive rail system.

The same principle applies in the restaurant. Here, the lighting should both contribute to a warm atmosphere and function when tables are moved or arranged in new ways. The lighting calculations show a combination of Zoom and Cold in the restaurant area, while the flexibility of the track system makes it possible to direct the light where it is needed.

Functional lighting for meetings and conferences

In the conference and meeting room section, priorities are changing. Here, the requirements for working light, uniformity and flexibility are higher, while the rooms must be able to be used for everything from ordinary meetings to presentations and larger events.

The lighting calculations for the project were carried out with 500 lux and 0.6 uniformity as targets for the conference hall and meeting rooms. In the large conference hall, for example, the calculation shows 578 lux and a uniformity of 0.61.

The luminaires in these areas are largely supplied with DALI, so that the lighting can be dimmed and adapted to different situations. The project requirements include separate lighting scenes for general lighting, presentations and other uses, as well as the possibility of controlling the area near the projector and screen separately.

An example of interior adaptation is Panel Relax . The luminaire is specially painted in RAL 1035 to integrate better into the ceiling and become a natural part of the room. The lighting delivery includes 127 Panel Relax with this adaptation.

Warm details in the guest rooms

In Hospitality projects, the goal is not necessarily a completely smooth slide. Contrasts, variety and small visual details help create a warmer and more interesting experience.

In the guest rooms, Cilla Mini is used in the entrance area, among other things. The luminaire has a recessed light source and is supplied with a gold-coloured anti-glare ring. The combination of 2700K and the golden detail gives a warm expression that fits well with the material and colour palette in the hotel. The solution with two Cilla Mini in the entrance area is used in both standard rooms, superior rooms and suites.

The same thinking is repeated in several of the hotel's common areas, where black fixtures, warm color temperatures, and details in gold and dark bronze connect the lighting with the interior. Liila 1 from Nuura in dark bronze is an example of a more decorative solution that adds a softer play of light and an extra detail to the room.

BREEAM as a premise

BREEAM-NOR Excellent has been an important premise throughout the project. Excellent was set as the certification target for both the design and the completed building, with a pre-analysis of 75.9 percent.

Norlux has documented its part of the lighting delivery against relevant BREEAM requirements. The declaration of conformity includes, among other things, HEA 01 Visual comfort, where illuminance, glare and uniformity are documented, in addition to requirements related to energy-efficient outdoor lighting and reduction of light pollution.

This is in addition to the extensive lighting calculations that have been carried out for the hotel's various room types and functions.

One project – several parts of Norlux

Drammen Health Park has also been a project across several of Norlux's market areas. Hospitality has delivered lighting solutions to Thon Hotel Drammen, while Commercial has delivered to other parts of Drammen Health Park. Retail has also delivered lighting to Vitusapotek in the health park.

The project thus shows the breadth of Norlux' deliveries – from hotels, restaurants and conferences to commercial areas and retail – all combined within the same area development.
